Online marketing is quite difficult. Whether you’re a blogger or a business owner creating an engaging website can be a tedious task. One of the major sources of traffic to your site is most likely Google search. But getting to the top of Google search results for certain keywords require quality articles, high ranking backlinks and various other aspects. In short, without working hard at promoting your website you’ll probably not reach your trageted traffic.

Why Social Media Presence is Important

As a blogger, I tend to concentrate on search engine rankings as my main source of traffic but as many SEO’s (search engine optimizers) know that you can’t put all your eggs in one basket. Getting backlinks is very important to the growth of your website but in the past few years having your articles/websites socially shared on social media websites is becoming a vital component in marketing. Having a few hundred retweets to your article, a couple of Google Plus ones or having your friends like your site on Facebook can have large effects online.

If you need to get traffic, sales, customers, awareness or help building your brand, social media is the key. If you don’t have a social media presence then you should get on it as quick as possible. As a business owner, blogger, marketer or someone who wants to promote a brand online social media is crucial to their success.

Do it yourself before you pay for a service

There are plenty of websites that help your social media marketing efforts but some aren’t the best. For example, there are well known online marketplaces where you can purchase Facebook likes, instagram followers, retweets on twitter and repins on Pinterest. Now they may sound good but many of these gigs that are sold can be “shady”. There are plenty of gigs that will help you improve your social media presence but you won’t know the effects of these fake likes, tweets, repins or followers in the long run.

Your best bet is to concentrate on doing your social media outreach yourself. Once you have a better understanding of the realm you can seek out for paid services that can assist you to improve your social media presence. However, for the time being I would suggest a free service called If This Then That (IFTTT). IFTTT connects and automates tasks with your web apps, the service is very similar to Zapier.

How does IFTTT Work?

Basically the services allows you to:

There are few terms you may need to understand before using IFTTT: channels, triggers, actions, ingredients and recipes. Channels are building blocks of the services. They can be both a trigger or an action. Most of these channels are social media networks like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+ and others.

An Action is basically what you want the web application to do, in other words a simple task that IFTTT can complete. A Trigger is something that sets off an action. As an example, lets say every time your photo is liked on Instagram (trigger) you will get an email in Gmail (action).

Ingredients are pieces of data retrieved from the Trigger to complete an action. For example an Ingredient on IFTTT can be defined as tweet, at @ reply, contact from your email list etc, etc.

And finally a Recipe is defined as complete action involving a trigger, action and an ingredient. Example: If someone mentions (ingredient) my brand (trigger) on Facebook (channel) then I will get an email (action).
