Backblaze Online Backup 15 Day Free Trial ($5 a Month Subscription)

By -

I thought I’d talk about Backblaze which is a online data backup service. Backblaze does come with a free trial offer but the reason why I thought I’d write about the company is because of the low cost of their services. At $5 a month it is by far one the most affordable online backup service on the web today.

Also, keep in mind that the $5 plan is the only plan that they offer, however, if you pay for a yearly subscription the cost would be much less but I’ll get into that later. And on top of the low subscription cost, Backblaze offers a 15 day free trial to test out their serveries.

Backblaze free trial details:

The trial period will last for 15 days. During those days you will be able to backup your data to Backblaze and also retrieve your files for free. You won’t need a credit card to use this offer. After the trial period has ended you will no longer be able to upload your data to Backblaze, however you will be able to retrieve the files you had initially uploaded during the 15 day period.

Steps to get started.

  1. Navigate to the homepage.
  2. Enter in your primary email address and a desired password.
  3. The Backblaze software will be downloaded to your computer. Locate the .exe file and install the software. Installation process will look something like this:

    Analyzing drives.

  4.  Once the drives have been analyzed and the software has been installed it will give you a list of the total amount of data on your computer.

  5. Once you have clicked “OK” the initial backup of your computer will start. On this window you will have the option to adjust upload speeds, pause and resume the upload, schedule backups, view logs and adjust other features. You will also see the remaining number of days there are on the free trial.

With Backblaze there are no limits. Members will receive unlimited storage for their data. There are no restriction on file size or type and you can easily backup external hard drives as well. Whether it be photos, videos, music, documents and other files, Backblaze will automatically upload your files as long as your connected to the internet via WiFi or Ethernet.

There is no need to manual backup files, with the Backblaze software your computer is continually transferring files to the comapnys data centers. The files are stored and compressed which then can easily be retrievable at any time of day or night (24/7).

You can restore your files to your computer by logging into the site and downloading a zip file from any computer. You can also have a USB and Hard Drive sent to your home via mail. This feature will cost you extra but may come in handy in rare occasions.

When backing up your files to Backblaze your computer won’t slow down. The software uses a single-read engine that is designed to throttle the upload speed so it doesn’t affect your use on the computer. You can expect to upload 2 to 4 GB of files per day depending on your internet speed. The throttle speeds can be adjusted to your liking.

Backblaze is available worldwide.

They also have a mobile app were you can access, share and download your files to your phone from anywhere. Currently the app is only available on Apple products: iPad, iPod, iPhone.

The software is available on the following computer operating systems: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Mac OSX.

I won’t get into too much detail about the security of their data center but I will explain how your files are safe. Files are double encrypted. This means before the files leave your computer they are encrypted and then they are transferred using a secure SSL through the software. The files are then stored in encrypted discs at a data center that is guarded. In simple terms; they use advanced technology to make sure your files are safe at all times.

Subscription Plans/Cost

There is only one plan available on Backblaze which is the $5 one. You can pay a subscription fee of $5 every month or you can save yourself some money by buying a yearly subscription. If you purchase a one (1) year subscription the total price will be $50 a year. If you decide to commit to a two year subscription you will have to pay only $95.

My opinion: If you’re looking for an affordable way to back up your files in a secure and simple fashion then I would go with Backblaze. It doesn’t have the credibility and popularity as other services but it wins my vote with the low, low, low monthly cost of $5. If you’re not sure whether to fork over five dollars a month then check out the free trial. Luckily, there is no need for a credit card when registering. So try it out and see if its worth your money.

If you do decide to purchase a subscription make sure to save yourself some money by paying yearly instead of monthly. The only thing I didn’t like about the service was that in order to backup files from another computer I would have to pay an additional $5 (per computer). Other than that, I didn’t see anything else wrong with the service.

I like to save people money by blogging about free trials, premium offers and deals on various online services across the web.
